ACTF Education Outreach: Brisbane

Being part of a national organisation, the ACTF Education team regularly partners with schools, subject associations and education departments across the country. Last week, our travels took us to north to sunny Queensland.

ACTF Head of Education Peter Maggs and Curriculum Officer Janine Kelly firstly headed to Brisbane, showcasing ACTF content and resources for Queensland’s Department of Education. Members of the Curriculum, Teaching and Learning team were eager to learn about content to engage students across a broad range of learning areas, and enjoyed hearing about Queensland schools’ prior involvement in ACTF events such as last year’s My Place Short Story Competition (in which the state made up 25% of entries).

Next our team headed to Wooloowin State School to chat with Year 6 teachers and students. Wooloowin is a past winner of the Little Lunch App Competition, and it was wonderful to see the students’ enthusiasm for the program in person – particularly for Mrs Gonsha! It was unsurprising to learn that new program Hardball was also a hit with these young handball fans.

Our final stop was at Mary MacKillop College in Nundah, where we met with a team of Media Arts teachers and their Year 9 and 10 students. Mary MacKillop students were active participants in our Mustangs FC and First Day webinars. Teacher Karyn Chapman explained that her students enjoy the opportunity to connect with industry professionals, and to connect their learning to the real world. Students watched an episode of factual entertainment series MY:24 in preparation for their upcoming unit on documentaries. They also asked us thoughtful questions about career pathways for the media industry.
